Xinuos announces the release of SCO UnixWare® 7.1.4+
June 10, 2013
Xinuos announces product and availability for SCO UnixWare® 7.1.4+, the latest version of the SCO UnixWare family of operating system products supporting both physical and virtual machines. In addition to new features and support for the latest hardware, this release introduces significant enhancements to the default configurations for two simplified editions, Enterprise and Base Editions. With the SCO UnixWare® 7.1.4+ Virtual Appliance, current SCO UnixWare 7.1.4 customers will be able to take full advantage of the benefits of running their applications in a virtualized environment with full support from Xinuos.
SCO UnixWare 7.1.4+ Virtual Appliance for VMware is a VMware-ready image of SCO UnixWare 7.1.4+ that can be installed on most VMware servers. The Virtual Appliance enables customers to capitalize on the benefits of virtualization, one of the fastest growing and most popular trends in the IT industry today. Virtualization allows multiple operating systems to run side-by-side as peers on the same hardware server. This provides a hardware cost savings and efficiency for IT departments. Additionally, customers who already have SCO UnixWare 7.1.4 virtual machines running on VMware can gain the benefits of SCO UnixWare 7.1.4+, including the VMware tools, by installing the Update Supplement on their existing virtual machines.
SCO UnixWare 7.1.4+ introduces a subscription licensing method to UnixWare where each license has a fixed duration requiring periodic renewal. The duration licenses entitle SCO UnixWare 7.1.4+ licensees to all future maintenance and updates issued by Xinuos, including price protection for customers as they transition to the next generation of systems from Xinuos.
SCO UnixWare 7.1.4+ includes a package of Virtualization Extensions. This package provides support for:
- Easy configuration of a SCO UnixWare 7.1.4+ virtual machine on first boot after installing the Virtual Appliance
- Reconfiguration of a virtual machine at any time
- Reconfiguration after cloning of your SCO UnixWare 7.1.4+ virtual machine to allow multiple versions to run in parallel. (Note that clones require separate licenses.)
“This release of SCO UnixWare 7.1.4+ will further enable customers to seamlessly integrate a virtualized system into their trusted SCO UnixWare environment and thus protect the investment in their business solutions they have made over the past years,” said Hans Bayer, Vice President of Worldwide Sales, Xinuos, Inc. “We have gathered feedback from Xinuos customers and partners and believe that this next release in the line of virtualized versions of its family of UNIX operating systems will continue to provide for a smoother transition to virtualization and significantly improve the total cost of ownership. Moving to a virtualized version of SCO UnixWare 7.1.4+ for VMware allows customers to extend the utilization of their application while at the same time benefiting from improved overall system performance. There are literally thousands of eligible servers in the marketplace running SCO UnixWare, so the opportunity for substantial sales is significant,” said Bayer.
iXorg Inc., an international group of system integrators, software developers, and consultants, had early access to SCO UnixWare 7.1.4+ for testing and evaluation. "This new release demonstrates Xinuos' on-going commitment to virtualization of their operating system products", said David Dew, owner of The Santa Cruz Connection and president of iXorg, Inc. "SCO UnixWare 7.1.4+ allows our customers to combine UnixWare's legendary reliability with the benefits of the VMware platform, including the reduced costs of hardware and power which result from server consolidation. Our customers can run their existing business critical applications in a virtualized environment, eliminating future hardware compatibility issues and supporting a cloud-based architecture when appropriate", said Dew.
